The Effectiveness of Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Chronic Mentally Ill Patients of Suwon Community Mental Health Center

Abstract

|
Objectives:The object of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic effect of the Suwon community mental health center(CMHC)’s psychosocial programs which began in 1996.
Methods: All 464 chronic mentally ill patients who have been managed in Suwon CMHC from 1996 to 2001 were selected. The data collection were based on the chart review and interviews of patients by center workers. The demographic characteristics of the patients were described by sex, age, education, marital status, address, diagnosis, age of onset, duration of illness, medical security status, form of engagement, route of enrollment, dosage of medication. The effect of the community mental health center’s psychosocial programs was analysed by psychiatric symptoms, daily living functioning, and number and duration of hospitalization.
Results: The male patients were 59.3%, the mean age of all clients were 42.4 years, and the mean educational duration was 10.2 years. 76.9% of the clients were unmarried, divorced, or separated. The schizophrenia was the most common(76.6%). The mean age of onset of mental illness was 24.6 years old, and the mean duration of illness was 15.2 years. The beneficiaries of medical insurance were 49.8%. The patients were engaged in the form of home visiting(50.4%), hospitalization(16.2%), independent living(10.6%), day-care program(7.3%), sheltered work(6.7%), assisted employment(1.5%), and competitive employment(1.1%). The most common routes of enrollment of the center were the referrals from other facilities and advertizement of the center. The psychiatric symptom and length of stay were decreased and the day living function was significantly improved.
Conclusion: The proven effectiveness of Suwon CMHC’s psychosocial programs in this study suggests that the community mental health center contributes in promoting psychosocial rehabilitation of the chronic mentally ill patients and in reintegrating them into the community.
